About us

The INTERLUTHERAN LITERATURE COMMISSION (CIL) is a work group of the Evangelical Church of Lutheran Confession in Brazil (IECLB) and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brazil (IELB). It was set up in 1965. Its main objective is to plan and promote the publication of literature of common interest of both Churches and, thus, to bear witness to Christian life in the context of the Brazilian society through the printed word.

CIL Responsabilities:

» To study the possibility of joint publications of:

- periodicals
- devotional books
- yearbooks
- books and leaflets;

To promote the publication, in a text in common, of translated works such as hymns, sacred music, catechisms, audio-visual material as well as all lutheran confessions;
To promote the editing, translation and publication of theological works of common necessity, examining, in the editorial plans of each church, titles that may be jointly published in the short-term, mid-term and long-term range;
To provide funds for publications;

To allocate resources for, promote and take part in seminars, meetings, conferences and courses with theologians, journalists, editors, writers, publishers and evangelical booksellers, aiming at technical improvements within the principles of social communication;

To discover and stimulate Christian literary vocations.

The Commission meets ordinarily four times a year, and extraordinarily at the convocation of the president or by request of 2/3 of the members, as often as necessary.

CIL appoints, amongst its members, a President and a Secretary for a two-year term. This board will have representatives of both Churches.

Its current president is pastor Arnildo Arthur Figur.

To carry out its duties CIL counts with a full-time editor and the Luther Works Editorial Commission (CEOL).

Selected Works of Martin Luther

The Selected Works of Martin Luther comprises 14 volumes of approximately 500 pages each. The project seeks to publish, in a Brazilian translation, representative writings of the different areas and periods of work of the Reformer, namely: the beginning and the program of the Reform (writings from 1517 to 1520), disputations and controversies, social ethics and politics, Church and worship service, biblical interpretation, polemic sermons and letters.

The collection makes it possible to understand not only the life of the Reformer, but also the very origins of the contemporary western world, which goes back to the Reformation. It is an indispensable resource for historians, social scientists, philosophers, theologians, teachers, politicians and citizens willing to commit themselves to building a better world following the call and the demands of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, so abundantly explored and masterfully interpreted by Martin Luther.

CIL has already published seven volumes of the selected works:

Volume 1: The Beginnings (writings from 1517 to 1519)
Volume 2: The Program of the Reform (writings from 1520)
Volume 3: Disputations and Controversies, I
Volume 4: Disputations and Controversies, II
Volume 5: Social Ethics
Volume 6: Political Ethics
Volume 7: Life in Community
Volume 8: Biblical Interpretation

Topics of the next volumes

Consequences of Luther’s preaching (congregation and worship)
Interpretation of the Scriptures (commentaries to biblical books).
Complementary volumes (sermons, letters, indexes).

“And the peace of God, which passes all understanding,
will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
(Philippians 4.7)
