Luther Hymns

A Mighty Fortress

Its original title is taken from Psalm 46. “God noster refugium et virtus –God is our refuge and strength”. It is Luther’s most famous hymn, and also the one that provokes the most heated debates concerning the date of its composition. The themes that appear in the hymn do not allow us to peg it to any one specific year. They could point to1521 or 1530, but they could just as well point to the years in between. Luther in fact saw his whole life as a struggle against “the old satanic foe”. Anyway, the hymn was already present in the Wittenberg Hymnal of 1528, which clearly means it must have been composed before this date. We simply cannot get a more precise dating.
The hymn can be found in Hinos do Povo de Deus (Hymns of the People of God) , # 97 and in the Lutheran Hymnal, # 165.

1 – Deus é castelo forte e bom defesa no armamento.

2 – A minha força nada faz, sozinho estou perdido.
