Luther Hymns

Oh God on High, Toward us turn Your Sight

The text presents a free version of Psalm 12, having been published for the first time in 1524 in Nurenberg. However, it must have been sung in Wittenberg before that. The hymn is set in the context of the discussions between Luther and the Enthusiasts in 1523. The hymn is filled with the pain caused by those discussions: "They do not let Your Word be the Truth". The Word of God is no longer the determining criterion for the Enthusiasts, who follow revelations from the Holy Spirit: " Faith, likewise, is totally extinct". But the revelations on which the Enthusiasts base their belief are "false appearances", inventions of "their own understanding". The consequence of this is that they do not understand each other ( "One follows this, the other that") and cause divisions among Christians (" Divided without any criterion"). When scolded, they boast openly. God himself must intervene so that this "perverse generation will not mix with us". Strophe 8, according to researchers, is almost certainly not of Luther's own writing.

Some strophes of this hymn can be found in Hymns of the Evangelical Church of Lutheran Confession in Brazil # 110 and Lutheran Hymnal # 241.

Deturpam as palavras sãs, No Verbo alicerçado.

Nós temos a revelação, decretos, leis e tradição;

5- Provada a prata é no calor, no fogo acrisolada.
A sã palavra do Senhor na angústia é confirmada.
Provado o Verbo pela cruz, revela então poder e luz,
iluminando a terra.

7- A glória a ti, o Pai e Deus, e a Cristo, o Filho amado;
a ti, Deus, toda a glória.
