Luther Hymns

Come O Savior of the Gentile

This hymn was also published in 1524 in Wittenberg and Erfurt, having been composed in the passage of 1523 to 1524. Luther translated the Ambrosian hymn Veni redemptor gentium to German. Already before the time of Luther there had been German versions of the same hymn, even one by Thomas Müntzer. Luther made few changes to the melody. Luther had great appreciation for medieval hymns, especially the ones that stressed the divinity of the child in the manger. The second strophe bears witness to this. Luther does not emphasize dogma for its own sake, but because of the Gospel contained within it.
