Luther Hymns

Be praised, Jesus Christ

The hymn was published in 1524 in Wittenberg and Erfurt, having been composed around the passage of 1523 and 1524. Its first strophe is composed following a medieval original, popular since at least 1370. To that original version, Luther added six more strophes. Its emphasis, however, shifted from the virginal birth to the paradox that takes place at Christmas. The third strophe is of particular relevance. Within this paradox, Luther believed, is contained the core of the nativity story. The whole Bible turns around this gravitational center.

1 - Louvor, ó Cristo, seja a ti, homem tu nasceste aqui
Kyrieleis.

2 - Filho unigênito do Pai jaz na manjedoura, olhai!
Kyrieleis.

3 - Maria embala com amor do universo o Criador.
Tornou-se criança, um bebê, o Rei do mundo, vem e vê.
Kyrieleis.

4 - A luz eterna vem brilhar, nova luz ao mundo dar;

Cristãos, vós todos jubilai eterna graça a ele dai!
Kyrieleis.
