Luther Hymns

With peace and joy I go

Until the 18th century the Lutheran church celebrated the festival of the purification of Mary on February 2. The Gospel of the day (Luke 2.22-23) was a favorite of Luther's. It includes the Chanticle of Simeon. The celebration of the festival, on February 2, 1524 made Luther transform the Chanticle of Simeon into a hymn. From then on it was no longer to be sung only by the priest or choir, but by the entire community. The hymn was printed in Wittenberg in 1524. In fact, it is not simply a translation of Luke 2. 22-32, but a rephrasing in light of Luther's understanding of the Gospel. The last strophe was added to the hymn in a 1545 edition.

1- Do mundo parto alegre e em paz, Deus o ordena;
