The hymn was first published in the "German Mass", in 1526 with this title. Given this, it is obvious that Luther intended it to substitute the Latin Sanctus. The text is based on Isaiah 6.1-14, reproducing only Isaiah's perspective, however. It was quickly included in a number of hymnals and was sung by evangelical communities at the Eucharist. The melody is Luther's own.

No templo a Isaías sucedeu:
no espírito o Senhor lhe apareceu
