(From the rising of the sun) Dr. Mart. Luther

The hymn, composed on December 12, 1541, is a translation of an old Epiphany hymn. Luther follows the Early Church in his interpretation of the January 6th Festival: it is the day the star led the Wise Men to the manger; the water turned to wine in Cana; John the Baptist baptized Jesus.

1 – Por que, Herodes, o pavor por ter nascido o Salvador?
Jesus não quer o reino teu, seu próprio reino traz do céu.

2 – A estrela os magos orientou E à vera Luz encaminhou.
Com seus presentes provas dão Que aqui jaz Deus e nosso irmão.

3 – De Deus Cordeiro, justo e bom, Foi batizar-se no Jordão,
Assim o que jamais pecou de todo o vício nos lavou.

4 – Milagre aconteceu então: Seis talhas de água cheias são;
Sua palavra a transformou, Em vinho tinto ele a tornou.

5 – Louvor e graça seja a ti, Nascido de Maria aqui.
Também ao Espírito e a Deus Pai Agora e sempre graças dai.
