The title of the song refers to the oldest German sacred hymn, the Easter hymn Christ ist erstanden (Christ is risen), well-known since the 13th century. Luther's predilection for this particular hymn is expressed in the words: " With time one becomes weary of any hymn, but the 'Christ is risen' we must sing every year." He considered it special for, unlike other Easter hymns, this one did not dwell on the suffering of Christ, but on the centrality of his resurrection.

When he composed this hymn, Luther merged the Christ ist erstanden with the Easter sequence Victimae paschali laudes immolent Christiani (Christians offer praise to the passover victim), in this way expressing all the joy that comes with the resurrection. His Easter sermons of 1524 reflect this, for he reproduces passages of the hymn therein. Which also means that the hymn must have come about around Easter 1524.

The hymn can be found in Hinos do Povo de Deus (Hymns of the People of God) , # 57 and in the Lutheran Hymnal, # 109.
